Waya Island is a beautiful place. Bayside is a small resort facing west towards the sunset and overlooks the stunning hills of Yalobi Bay. The village is about 20 minutes walk along the beach - close enough to visit but far enough away to give each its privacy. It is blessed with natural spring water that feeds from the high hills of Waya and provides with an ever flowing supply of fresh drinking water.
Resort have flush toilets but not hot water showers - the heat of the day warms up the water just enough to make the shower water fresh to the skin. No electricity or telephones or any other modern conveniences so that the simple and traditional atmosphere is retained. However kerosene lantern lamps are provided at night time and emergency torches for guests. It's simple living, but from past guest comments it is what they like about Bayside and what makes their Fiji holiday so special.
Location
On Waya Island in the Yasawa Group.
Accommodation
There are two traditional thatch bures built in the style of a Fijian house. Both bures are a few steps from the beach and shielded by coconut palms to give them protection from the afternoon sun. A beachside hammock is provided for each bure. The two bures are built on individual rock foundations raised slightly from the ground. Walls are of thatch reeds bound together and lashed on to a bamboo frame using coconut string.
Bamboo walls line the inside of the bure with traditionally designed material draped along the skirting. The high ceilings with open wooden beams are the natural air conditioners for the tropics - cool by day and warm at night. Each bure has a double bed with mosquito net, lounge chairs and table. There are two doors in the bure, one at the front, and one on the side which leads into the shared bathroom.
The bathroom sits between the bure giving easy access from each. The bathroom has an outside sink and a separate flush toilet and cold water shower.
Dining & Entertainment
Meals are served in the small open plan restaurant close to the beach. Breakfast is generally home baked pancakes and fruit from our gardens. Lights lunch is served and a fresh dinner, usually fish from the lagoon, vegetables from the garden and local root crops, rice or potatoes. Resort also offer vegetarian meals on prior request. There is no electricity at Bayside Resort so drinks are stored in the ice chest to keep them cool. You can purchase soft drinks and beer but if you want to bring your own drinks that is no problem. Water comes from the natural spring which is fed high up in the hills of Waya.
